Behind the Counter at a Community Internet Café

These notes were compiled from three weeks following the operators of a community internet café on the outskirts of Bandung, a local digital literacy hub that rarely appears in mainstream academic research.

This internet café is more than just a place to rent a computer. It functions as an informal learning space: older residents learn video calling to reach their children working away from home, students do their online schoolwork, and the operators double as technicians and digital mentors without ever calling themselves that.

These field notes are part of Alter Imaginaries' effort to document knowledge infrastructure that grows outside formal institutions, and why infrastructure like this deserves to be sustained rather than simply replaced by big platforms.
