Research and mentorship on alternative digital knowledge.
Alter Imaginaries was born from a question that kept surfacing across different kinds of work: independent publishing, feminist digital platforms, university research centres, and ethnographic research networks. The question is simple, but not easy to answer: who gets to be seen as knowing, and how is a piece of knowledge judged legitimate?
Knowledge is often judged by measures set by the state, campuses, markets, and donors, publications, rankings, funding, visibility, or credentials. Meanwhile, oral stories, collective memory, lived experience, and knowledge that grows within communities are often dismissed as too personal, too informal, or not important enough.
Alter Imaginaries traces how alternative knowledge is woven, recognized, and contested across Indonesia and the region, and how it stays alive even as the state and markets decide what counts as legitimate.
Alter Imaginaries is a research and mentorship project documenting how digital workers, young organizers, independent publishers, creative workers, and community workers across Indonesia and Malaysia produce and circulate knowledge outside the dominant institutional tracks. Led by Prof. Inaya Rakhmani and Dr. Annisa R. Beta together with Anotasi, the project brings together field research, mentorship, and open publication to build a living, growing archive of alternative knowledge.
The writing on this site is not a final word. Alter Imaginaries runs throughout 2026, staying open to new questions and changing alongside the stories and experiences that keep coming in.
If you have a story about how alternative knowledge lives in a community space, a workplace, a learning space, or any other space around you, we want to hear it. Alternative knowledge doesn't grow through one-way consumption, but through attention, conversation, and relationships that are continually cared for.
